Hunger Games Friday: The Curiously Short Life & Death of Primrose Everdeen

Primrose Everdeen (Prim) is the younger sister to Katniss Everdeen and the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Everdeen. She is twelve years old when the series begins and she is only fourteen when she dies in the infamous two-timed bombing of the Capitol.

Because of her youth and her feminine appearance of a young, naive, helpful, little girl, many scholars skirt over her importance to The Hunger Games trilogy. However, most fans of the trilogy would instantly state that Prim is crucial to the entire series.

In a poll, 62% of participants voted that Primrose Everdeen was crucial to the story line.

After all, if Prim had never been reaped, Katniss would never have volunteered. If Katniss had not gone into the Games with Peeta and defied the Capitol, the revolution would never have ignited. If the revolution had never begun, the Games would continue on with President Snow in charge of Panem. In one of my last chapters, I discuss how every action that Katniss takes is in protection of her sister Prim, primarily because Prim represents hope. It is this hope, intimately connected with agency, that draws readers into the world of Panem.

  1. Prim was extremely important to the Hunger Games series for all the reasons you mentioned. She was the driving force behind just about every decision Katniss made. Prim even kept Katniss alive during the first Hunger Games because Katniss promised Prim she would do her very best to survive. There is something to be said about having something, or in this case someone, to live and fight for. And ultimately, this is what makes the ending of the series so heart wrenching!! Everything Katniss lived and fought for literally went up in smoke near the end of the third book. It tore my heart in two because I knew how important Prim was to Katniss. So I would say Prim just might be the most important part of the Hunger Games series. She is the key element to everything. Without Prim, is there really even a story??

    1. Heather, yes! You do clearly and articulately described Prim’s significance in the story! I love your end questions, without Prim is there really even a story? Of course not! Now my questions for you, without Prim, what was the point? Katniss’s entire mission was to protect her sister and ultimately she lost. Does that present negative connotations for the series end?

      1. Although I felt sad when Prim died, I don’t think it was negative. Honestly, I think it made everything more realistic. The fact is, even though Hunger Games is set in the future, Katniss’ story is not unique. I believe many people have found the courage to stand up and fight against the wrong in our world because of someone they loved; someone they wanted to protect or create a better world for. And in reality, many times the casualties of doing what is right and good is the loss of the ones we are fighting for. So while it was horrible for Prim to die, it really did make the series great because it was a realistic loss everyone could feel deep inside.
