The Virtue of Wanting and Waiting

Waiting

Is far different than

Not Wanting

Waiting

Is partial, temporarily chosen

Abstinence

Waiting

For blush, blue bouquets

Cracked oak wine barrels

Yards of lingering lace

Blue skies with blue breeze

A veil that flutters beneath

Diamond-encrusted tiara

Waiting

Is far different than

Not Wanting.

Chastity is the state or practice of refraining from extramarital, or from all, sexual intercourse. In this poem, I really wanted to focus on the point that chastity is not necessary having no sexual desires, but it is all about choosing not to act on them.

Poetry

The Virtue of Reaching Out

Thrown to the ground

In nothing but a sheet

She shivers, trembles, and shrinks

Into hot sand

Harsh voices raising, roaring,

Accusing, Branding, Charging

Spit and spittle splatter

Flung against her face

Rock rumble in hungry hands

Waiting, wanting, to be thrown

Then,

He is there

Extending, Offering

A Hand

Kindness is the act of showing compassion or mercy to someone who may or may not deserve it. Kindness can be shown in small or large ways. This poem was inspired by the kindness that Jesus showed the adulteress in John 7.

The Virtue of Time

What is the passage

                             Of time

                                             Except for

An opportunity

                          For Growth?

Patience is the ability to accept a delay or an upset without responding negatively. Patience, in my opinion, is one of the hardest virtues that requires we see patience as an opportunity for self-growth.

The Virtue of Submission

Her

All eyes focus on

Her

Her beauty

Her creations

Her talents

Yet Her eyes lift

To focus on

the One

who Created

Her.

Humility, or the act of being humble or even to humble oneself, is the act of looking outward instead of inward. Humility is not the dismissal of one’s self worth or talents but rather choosing not to boast, choosing to give thanks for the talents that they have.

The Virtue of Never Giving Up

“Ink splatters

Expelled from the

Force of the Author’s Might.

Paper tears

Punctured from the

Pressure of the Author’s Mind.

Lead fractures

Cracked as it is

Compelled by the Author’s Hand.

She will not stop.

She cannot stop

Until the job is done.”

diligence

Charity can be seen as the act of giving. However, in a more Christian-centered defition, Charity is love and kindness toward others, even if they do not deserve it. Aquinas attributed Charity to the love of God. This charitable poem was inspired by the act that took place in John 6.

Poetry

The Virtue of Giving Away

“Small hands lifted high

Seven loaves of bread

A few salty fish

Hardly enough to feed

Himself.

Yet, he does not

hesitate

To offer it all

For the sake

Of another.”

Poetry

The Virtue of Pouring Out

This is a choice.

To drown in the glass

To let the cold, clear ice

Clink against the rim

As cloudy, cool liquid

Taunts and Tempts my Tastebuds

This is a choice.

To put down the vice

To emerge from the brown haze

Into a blue sky, cleared by

A summer rain.

This is my choice.

To dump the smooth liquid

Down the drain instead of

My mouth, to Drain

It from my body.

However, painfully,

Excruciatingly

It might be.

To see clearly

What I had looked

Away from

before.

As you all know, last week I ended my series focusing on the Seven Deadly Sins in which I wrote a poem about each of the sins without using its name within the poem itself. I have decided to do the same for the Seven Virtues created to combat each of the sins. These Seven Virtues first appeared tied together in an epic poem titled Pschomachia, written by Aurelius Clemens Prudentius, a Christian governor of the 400s AD. To battle Gluttony, there is Temperance.

Temperance

Temperance is moderation or self-restraint, especially in eating and drinking. While one drink may not be wrong, alcoholism can become a serious problem. This poem demonstrates the importance of exercising temperance, even when it is difficult.
