Seniors strut through
High school office
Smiling at those they
Are leaving behind
Exuding arrogance
Shared equally with ignorance
On their way out
Out of their high schools
Out of their towns
Out of their pre-conceived prisons
To enter into–
Become a part of–
To mix and intertwine
With the “real” world
A world better than
The world they left behind
A world that will understand
Command, demand their untapped
Brilliance.

Ah, I remember that ignorance. That first semester of college will wake you up.

Arrogance is definitely the best word to describe it 😀 I felt it too at that time.

Didn’t we all? This false sense of invulnerability as we faced the world as adults!

Yup. Oh boy I didn’t know what was waiting for me at the time. Adulthood was tough on me, and I’m just now starting to get the hang of it at almost 23!

I completely believe that the 20s are the golden age NOT the teens!

Arrogance and ignorance – yes! Then there is the awakening when we go to college and/or get a job. Outstanding poem.

Thank you so much! And most definitely, just because you were the “top dog” at a school does not guarantee you a place in the “real world.” We have to work for everything we want.

That transition can definitely send you reeling, and sometimes it takes years to find your place in the world.😉
