Now, before you get all…
Take a second to hear me out.
It is completely OKAY to re-use old content. You might have noticed lately that I have been re-sharing writing and blogging advice that I posted in the past.
Here’s why:
- My Blog is Growing! (Which is awesome by the way) And that means that I have new followers.
- New followers means that I have people currently following my blog and reading my posts who have not seen the old posts.
- So, I share the old posts for two primary reasons:
- So that my new followers will have access to writing and blogging tips previously published
- And that my old followers will be reminded of writing and blogging tips they have previously read.
Not only is this beneficial for my followers, new or vintage, but it is helpful for me as well because it helps fill up my blogging schedule.
Now, don’t get me wrong. You should not, definitely not, spam your blog with old content. Do not repost the same blogs every week or every month in a never ending cycle. Your blog should consist primarily of new content with some old content thrown in.
Here is what I consider the golden ration when I post 10 times every two weeks:
8 new vs. 2 old
(In every two week span I normally re-share 1-2 posts per 10 blogs)
80% of my blogs are new, fresh, and exciting content while 20% is resharing previously published content for those who have not seen it or need the reminder.
Also, I hardly ever re-share movie reviews, contest results, etc. because no one needs to hear that twice. I only ever re-share writing tips, blogging tips, and maybe the occasional short story or poem.
What do you think about re-sharing previously posted content?
What is your golden ratio?

I fully support this post! I think it is an excellent idea to reshare blog posts, especially since your blog has taken off like a rocket, and this will be helpful for your new followers. I also support your ratio. I once followed a blog where it seemed like the majority of their posts were reused and I was not a fan. I also didn’t appreciate that the blogger didn’t give enough time between “shares.” Sometimes I’d think, didn’t I read this last week?

Thanks for the support TShaw!
I totally know what you mean! There definitely has to be a gap between the first post and the re-posting. Otherwise, it simply becomes repetitious instead of intellectual and helpful.

Yes, it’s nice to be reminded, but let me forget first. x)

It’s something I’ve never thought avout doing. I can see your point as your new subscribers can see you earlier content.

Exactly 🙂 I wouldn’t encourage first time bloggers to be doing it any time within the first 4-5 months, that should all be new. But if the blog is growing and you’ve got good posts that are beneficial for your followers, it’s a great idea to re-share!

I agree but like you said maybe only once a month.

i re-use my own content after one year. as you say, lots of new followers by then who haven’t read the original post.

Smart timeline! I think it’s even alright to reuse perhaps after 6 months or so. As long as you’re not posting a ton!

i post on WP only once a week. so that’s 52 posts a year. i post daily on IG and FB author page. keeps me pretty busy 🙂 do you post regularly on other social media platforms?

So I post 5 times a week Mon-Fri in WP, I post irregularly on Instagram and Facebook. More frequently on Instagram. They definitely keep me busy!

I did it once – I re-blogged a short academic piece previously written (by me) for another blog. I shared it on my blog when I originally started but after my long hiatus I re-blogged for Black History Month (UK) – in six months it has had 3 views!!!

Oh wow! I’ve noticed that you have to find people who are interested in your topics and academics might be harder on wordpress

It was written for a blog, and was really popular on the original blog (the most views etc. was my feedback at the time) then I used it and it was relatively popular with my low readership at the time. However, whenever I write on the blogging theme, I have popular posts! 🙂

I have only reblogged a few, but may start to do so more often. As you say, new followers are coming on board all the time. I only have a few that still visit me regularly after the 1,000 or so poems and songs I have posted, so I think I’ll be safe! Thanks for this post!

I think it really is okay (and even a great idea!) to repost occasionally 🙂 everyone’s “Golden ratios” will probably be tailored to their individual blogs

It’s like reruns on telly, right? 😀 Easy to disparage, but hey, reruns can be good, too! (Except when TV4 is showing The Beast of the Bering Sea every goddam week…)

I have reposted some of my older posts. I review the post first in case I want to make changes. I have also trashed some of my older posts, reworked them and posted as new content. And sometimes, I pull out parts of old posts and save them is a Word doc, which I can use later.

That is so smart! I definitely noted that I need to always review and update my posts when I re-share. Good advice
