What do I mean by that? Here’s the thing, my ideal environment to write in is up in the mountains of Big Bear, sitting on the deck of a two story cabin, the sky blue and the breeze light with birds chirping in the background. However, as a full time student and worker, my chances for retreating to the mountains are minimized. That doesn’t mean that I can’t manipulate my current environment.
What I find helpful is setting up a space. For me, that is my kitchen table. There is plenty of room for me to spread out my laptop, my notebook, my sources, and hey! easy access to food! But before I can start writing I find that I need music. For me, that means turning on Pandora and clicking on The Hunger Games soundtrack playlist which has already been modified by my thumbs up and down. These familiar songs automatically switch my brain into writing mode.
Music is such a great motivator! Maybe you don’t have a specific playlist that comes to mind. Have you considered playing gaming music (specifically boss level music). If you aren’t sure what this means, in video games there is specific music that comes on when a character faces the ultimate bad-guy; this music has been specifically created to motivate the gamer and keep them engaged. In the same way, if you are having a hard time staying motivated, consider playing music from a popular video game.
If that’s not your thing, consider playing soothing music in the background or simply your favorite playlist. Whatever you decide, try to keep it consistent. That way, when you hear the familiar music, you will automatically think that it is time to write!
This one might not be applicable to everyone, some of you might prefer to work in complete silence and that is okay! Whatever you do, try to control your environment the best you can. This might not always be possible so the important thing is to keep writing.

Another great tip, KaylaAnn. I’m quite similar to you when it comes to my writing environment, except, I write everything down on paper before transferring them to a Word document. Many find that tedious but it works for me.

It might be tedious but it is super helpful! Before every beginning a new chapter I do rough outlines and paragraphs on paper!

It is. Plus, it helps keeps you more focused. There’s a lot of things on a laptop that can derail your concentration.

I used to write on a Word document for like fifteen minutes, then I’d take a 15 minute break, write for another 15 and take another 15 minute break. It was a terrible idea.
P.S. I love your idea of listening to video game music. Haha. I listened to instrumentals that has this heart pumping, thrilling feel to it.

Hahaha it sounds good in theory but probably doesn’t work so well in application, huh?
And heck yea! Battle Boss music!

Yay! I’m not alone. It makes me feel a little grounded. Like, I’m not lost in the Internet with my electronics in my hand.

I don’t plan my environment ’cause I’m not alone. I write where there is space to write. I agree that music helps a lot to find ideas

I live with people too 🙂 That’s why I write whenever the house is the most empty. Or maybe, if that is impossible in your situation, consider finding a coffee shop that you can spend hours in 🙂

I usually do what you do. I have my own desk setup and listen to music tailor-made to suit the style of writing I intend on doing to jump start my creativity.

Currently I need absolute silence to write, but movie/tv show soundtracks have been known to help settle me into my enviroment.
