They took away my benches
There is no place to sit
They took away my benches
And I might throw a fit
I visited my old high school
The day before the last
I felt that all too familiar pull
From memories of the past
Those benches of silver steel
Used to house my friends
It was there we made our deals
And there we made amends
They took away my benches
There is no place to lay
They took away the benches
That stood there in my day

What a sweet little poem, Kayla! I can easily imagine it set to a tune, with you singing it. Do you sing? 🙂 Also, I almost expected the first line to be a reference to spoons, as in the spoon theory. Ah well, associations!

Thank you Alice! So sweet of you to say so! I do sing indeed and definitely wanted this poem to feel a little “sing-songy.”
I can see where you would make that association 🙂

I can relate to having memories flood back when visiting school. I’m going to my old school tomorrow, and just the thought of going has brought back so many memories.
