Poetry Contest

Contest is NOW closed, thank you!

If you are wanting to participate in my latest End of Summer Poetry Contest, click here!

Are you a poet? Do you enjoy writing poems until your heart is sore or until it soars?

Well, I happen to LOVE reading poetry so I would like to hold a poetry contest! Read the rules and prizes below!

  • To be eligible for this competition you must be subscribed to my page (i.e. following and receiving emails.) Not subscribed yet? No worries! Go to my home screen and click FOLLOW (I’ll receive a notification when you do :D)
  • Leave your poem or a link to your chosen poem in the comments below.
  • I will be using a point system to chose the winner:
    • You will receive 5 points automatically for subscribing (everyone must subscribe to be eligible)
    • You will receive another 2 points for sharing the contest on your your own blog and linking back
    • Your poem will be rated on a 1-10 scale based on creativity, structure, content, and overall awesomeness. While we are near the holidays, you do not have to write a holiday poem (although you are welcome too as well!)
    • Technically someone can still win without sharing my contest, but sharing would provide additional points for any poems that are tied.
    • Because of the expected high volume of submissions, please keep your poem at a reasonable length. For sure no poems 3 pages +. If you have any questions regarding length, feel free to ask in the comment section!
    • You can only submit one poem per blogger.
  • Last date for submissions is November 20th!

  • The WINNER of this poetry competition will received two things
    • FIRST, their poem and their blog/bio will be featured on my site. This will be a great chance for you to get some publicity on another blogger’s site.
    • SECOND, they will receive a copy of The Dazed Starling. This journal contains poetry and short stories (one of which is mine!)

Dazed Starling

So get writing, because I cannot wait to start reading!

  1. Reblogged this on SaltandNovels and commented:
I don’t write poetry, however, I do care about the readers of my blog and I know a few poets amongst them. So I decided to share Kayla’s post here, on my page:))) I hope it will be useful for those bloggers who would like to showcase their poetic works.

  2. Autumnal Awareness
    by T. Haven Morse

Refreshed, I come into the light.
A new day arises, free from yesterday’s baggage,
    aware I am invincible.

Depressed, I go into the night.
Sunset alerts me to a closing day of opportunity,
    aware I am limited.

Refreshed, I come into the light.
A new life reborn into a white-washed narrative,
    aware I am lucky.

Depressed, I go into the night.
Sunsets and coffins never-ending, my immortal plight leaves me little-more-than aware.

Thanks, Kayla! Always fun to share poetry prompts with fellow poets. 🙂

  3. Hi, Kayla Ann!

Thank you, for creating such a fabulous poetry contest. I don’t know if I did the pingback correctly linking my poem to this post, but just in case I did it wrong I wanted to leave a link to my poem here.

I have a question, though. Is it ok, to decline the second prize, if you do win? I’m not too comfortable giving away personal information.

      1. It is not necessary to accept the journal of short stories/poems if you feel uncomfortable giving out your personal information 👍🏻 You can win and just accept me sharing your bio and poem on my page

  4. Nightmares
    By: T. R. Justus

    They follow you

    Like bats in the night

    You can’t outrun them

    You can never hide

    They’ll be there waiting

    Always waiting

    For you to fall asleep

For your mind to finally be theirs

You can fight it all you want

Force your eyes to never close

    Soon you’ll give in

    And they’ll be there

    They’ll play with you

Showing what you never want to see

Saying what you never want to hear

Until you beg for it to stop

Pleading for it all to be over

But your mind does not listen

    Your eyes do not open

    They cannot hear your cries

And you’re forced to see the images

    So gruesome and bizarre

Your feet try to carry you away

Try taking you from the nightmares

    But they follow you

    They’ll always follow you.

(Thanks so much for doing this poetry contest. I will reblog this to my blog this morning!)

  5. Title: 22 Just

Though everyone will own a song like this
Those blood blue lights won’t mean a thing
Never knowing you their aim will miss
The other, red, spinning ’round your ring

She said to him “we’ll shoot for mars”
    The keyhole house the symphony
With spirits over districts claiming stars
Turn once for luck and twice for blasphemy

The boy who took you is bold and brash
It takes more souls than the frozen sea
One long blink and a softened crash
“I’ll claim your life if you pledge to me”

    Constellations falling out of line
You’ll break bread with the Holy Ghost
    Dripping leaves and twisted twine
And His son will say that he loved her most

    1. I look forward to reading it! And I understand you not wanting to share personal information and you can win and not accept the journal. Don’t forget you can also share the blog to earn an extra +5 points 👍🏻
